A lopsided egg of a moon

A lopsided egg of a moon

invited me into sleep

even after shutting the curtain against her light.

She stirred wakefulness,

and a sloshing fancy of dreams,

dreams of time travel and remembered people,

an upsurge of unknown futures and staccatos of history.

New land, an unwritten life, and no one to catch me

disturbs digestion,

but moments come when slow, long-distance swell

breaks overhead,

washing my shoulders, sucking at my ankles,

shifting immense vulnerability to a salty, and fresh excitement.

If you need more time

If you need more time

for the new birds to find you,

take more walks with your awkward, fledgling self.

Squawking and flight, a generous song now and again,

will always surround you.

Being the only of a kind in a place

opens more relationships than you might think, while

flavor of faith develops

with your stronger listening ears.

It is needed as you continue, seeing ahead

and noticing the talon prints you’ve left behind.

Feather etchings

Feather etchings of wrinkles,

our tributaries of experience, deepen

towards more

not less.

Must we forget what the soul always knows,

that appearance is not worth

and youth is not to be strived for

but grown beyond?

Instead of living seventy years

as wobbly egos forever hungry and

needing to be bolstered,

we can throw our arms, like thick-barked tree limbs,

around death,

our constant friend teaching us

the riches of storied contours and

what it is to truly live.

With clouds pressing rising earth,

this heart bounds in resolution and song.

Perhaps the day is young, and loss fright will re-emerge,

but a ginger shift happened,

a burst of rhizome heat scattered sorrow,

and medicine spoke.

It is, as ever, bone close.

Break the rim

≈ Comments Off on Break the rim

Sorrow pools,

tears break the rim and,

with them, shadow of knowing

that salty drops rise when it matters-

any thing,

something,

this thing-

and a quarter turn brings

appreciation,

saying

stop

in this place, now-

where old meets new

gently

and slow.

Nothing so pretty

Sun drapes her sheer cloth across the hillsides,

Mixed flocks, busy in fruiting trees, chirp amicably,

A chill has crept in at night, the woolens brought to bed,

and nothing so pretty as autumn has graced the canyon

in a long time.

Facing sunrise

≈ Comments Off on Facing sunrise

Memories are being given away,

space no longer for rent to the unwelcome.

A wooden chair with woven seat sits now

facing sunrise.

Closets have been emptied, drawers cleared out

and sold.

Neither vacancy nor void, but place has opened,

safe, dynamic, light and warm.

The river turns here

The river turns here,

around a mountain- one ancient, familiar, not to be forgotten.

From mature, back to youthful, thick water tumbles on

toward old age.

No guessing when, nor how, not even what awaits

on the other side of the mountain,

but slowing into transition, touching each passing stone,

scoops up now drop by sweet drop,

the flavor of entry into great unknown.

Proper weight of memory

Unsure the proper weight of memory,

this trough I built is full.

The heavy bottomlessness of water sucks under,

especially when it prefers to move.

Sensing an unintended timelessness,

I pull, twist, crack apart worn wood,

watch stasis become

a brook babbling its true and changing song.

To the fierce woman

To the fierce woman–
not the girl, whatever the age, trying to look pretty,
to be nice,
not the girl in the woman’s body aiming
to be desired, seductive, adored, heroic, cool, mysterious,
No, no-
To the fierce woman who knows the song of her own heart’s beat,
who cares not about how she appears, but about who she is,
who isn’t reaching for the next best outfit, witty comeback, title or
right answer–
To the fierce woman who walks how she walks,
talks how she talks,
ages as she brilliantly ages,
sees how she sees and
loves how she loves,
my God, Welcome.
Welcome to this world.
You
are
needed.
