Lit by fires

While reaching forward, we’ve no knowing

how far goes the reaching back,

our days lit by fires long ago.

The generations that birthed us here,

inside this present day,

the losses they carried and blessings

they bestowed.

What vision is ours, what vision has been given?

The living breath spiraling us ahead,

steam engine of our days,

extends behind us on tracks buried

by histories untold.

Ancestors are quivering the roots,

make no mistake.

We are not here just for ourselves.

Take ears to the stones, stories be talking.

Wake up!

Wrestling with the ancestors,

shaking their tree–

Wake up, wake up! You have errors

you must correct.

Generations long damage still revealing itself,

this is not solely on the living.

Clear the way, remove the pall,

obstacles you unwittingly erected,

not the monuments you believed them to be.

Pick up a sledgehammer–

face your mistakes,

smash their marble facades,

crack the foundation,

watch them crumble and let wind blow them away.

Your legacy awaits.

Life needs to bloom.

Get on it!

Planting Stones

A fresh blood, now, runs from this wound,

dripping thick, womb-blood red,

to thirsty ground.

The trail follows me as I leave,

planting stones.

Each feeds dark Earth,

sticks weapons of their confusion, fast.

My back, low belly, my heart unwilling,

unaccepting soft targets,

half a lifetime on.

Planting stones returns

this deepest and cruel ancestral story

to the Mother who fashions stone into gold,

medallions for witful generations to come.

Flowers may bloom, cool waters may move,

Hummingbird brings those open prayers

to Heaven.

It ends with me.

I walk away into land of blowing dust,

with stars shining straight from the hands of God,

I walk away toward the fire

ever burning on…

Wannabe king

Wannabe king parades in,

bare butt flapping in the wind, saying,

My clothes are the finest in the world–

in all the worlds–

simply gaze upon them,

My apparel line, starting price 10 million,

will launch this fall.

The people hear, but more, they

see

his paunch of arrogance and delusion

while the gun salutes shoot off,

polluting collective sky.

The people march, no king, the people gather,

no thanks, no king for us today.

Holy rage

I see her, red hair aflame,

paint flying.

Swaths of blackest black,

gashes of scarlet–

blood, bone, ash, scorch,

ochre of marrow.

Enough words, make image.

Shock the system with truth,

Pandora’s box wide,

coffins nesting

and thrown open, skulls screaming out,

souls of generation upon generation of women:

This will not stand.

This will not stand.

No!

This is no poem

I’m puzzled by where we find ourselves,

puzzled, grieving, sickened.

When did hate root itself in our choices?

And divisiveness and defensiveness,

offendedness, opinion and othering,

fragile egos and rigidity,

become the stuff of a collective north star?

This illness snakes through my own family–

microcosm macrocosm–

its source generations back, before mental memory.

Remaining in body.

Remains,

a cemetery, until recognized,

named.

In this moment, and they do keep changing,

rearranging,

I see us collectively entranced

staring, a shadow Narcissus, into the dark side

of a mesmerizing mirror image

in polluted waters.

What are we watching? Reading?

Ingesting, binging, consuming online,

in media and from around us?

Which likes? Which feeds?

What groups, cohorts?

And who actually pulls the invisible strings behind?

Where’s the money go by addiction

to corporate feed?

We’re being factory farmed.

We are stuck until we can each awaken

to the worst in ourselves,

seeing there is no other, no

out there,

no them.

It is we. This is our sickness.

Which seeds will we water in ourselves?

In one another?

Hate?

Or love?

Pick up the phone,

talk with a friend, remember

sound of voice, warmth of body,

land holding us up,

and that breath

is finite.

Suspenders, belt and cane

He walks through, slow, steady,

racing stripes down the arms of his cotton shirt,

stick angled ahead of him and taking his weight,

his grandson leading in front.

Not every day suspenders and belt combine–

gotta love the full barrel belly and ambling body

rich with story.

Onward, onward to the next adventure..

From the unseen low-turned speakers,

music swirls in his wake.

The tumult is our own

The tumult is our own.

It happens out there but in here the real storms play out.

We take action, response comes, repeat.

Sometimes a looooong stretch of waiting shows

what changeable beasts we are;

How to set down outcome

and reside in the lively space between this and that…

Sturdy land goes liquid, tables collapse, chair tips over,

the cat catapults herself to the top of now crooked refrigerator.

Yes, the happenings.

But, oh, the tumult.

Work with the shiftless, restless, beautiful

beast.

The rest takes care of itself.

Twisted linen

Twisted linen in the closet:

rumpled skirt, wrinkled vest..

Who would imagine shirts

could dent.

Comical to even consider remedying that.

Seems I can not stay put.

A magnet polarized from place

when place is done.

Not that I want to be washed from the creekbed.

I’ve bolted, leapt, flown, jumped and been

catapulted;

I’m praying for a gentler crossing

this go round.

The hanging lines held in linen

are a telling road map

of more to come.

We reach back

17 Saturday Feb 2024

≈ Comments Off on We reach back

We reach back in the generations,

untangling threads,

and wonder over familiar terrain,

hunting fruit-bearing trees never noticed

before.

But before

was when the wood was too green,

flowers knocked off by freeze,

bees unable to work their magic–

harvest waiting for the right season.

I wander the woods

after sharing those stories again and again,

ones asking unanswerable questions,

sensing the complexity of things.

I did not know,

until now,

I am the winged one

returning to the grove

to hum between pink petals

and play my part

in the fecundity of my ancestors.

Ancestors

whose bones move beneath this skin,

whose bones make blood

carrying me to the end of my days.
