body is home

chasing light
entering shadow
more rises in the non-scape
than the known-scape.
strings become ropes become chains,
careful what you attach to
you’ll have to drag it alone.
if image and sound, sensation, scent
and a sip of watermelon juice with lime and mint
aren’t plenty,
how heavy we all become.
time’s short,
selling freedom and wild soul, long.
with camera, notebook and #2 pencil
these steps brighten.
heart finds nourishment in embodied moments.
body is, through it all, home.

What keeps a day

Olives here taste of rooted earth,

perfume,

undissolved salt…

in minute crystals.

I am as lopsided as any human,

careful with my creations but learning

as often as the sun is rising-

anywhere.

What is golden to my eye may appear blue

to you.

Isn’t that what keeps a day

and a long-stretching night ripe

with intrigue and a mineral calm?

The Aegean waits for my skin

to touch it again.

Fruiting trees observe

with time’s ease and abundance.

My own sorrows are meaningless

in sight of Beauty,

they are salt

added to the Sea.

Into the pine

great horned owl flies

and rests, for a time, at twilight.

The same tree

in which you dreamed,

long ago,

owls stood watch-

one guardian facing southwest waters,

another the northeast ridge line..

What you dream is busy

dreaming you.

Her bones

Her bones

fall into mine.

Her fight, her grief,

her bite,

in my arms, my legs, this heart,

are embraced.

She lost footing, at last,

giving up land for the sea.

There I swim,

offering her resting place,

and the tender hold

she has hungered for

all along.

Rhesus monkeys

When rhesus monkeys come

to Dharamsala,

the cedars speak louder their wordsong

and blue green saturates sky

made milky by rains.

Taking coffee at a bistro table and

looking up to catch eyes looking down–

Moonpeak behind and unwalked horizon ahead–

wedding pen to paper becomes

a most important act.

If only

I weave gold

from Light.

When next you find yourself reaching for rope

to heft yourself back up from the cavern,

I’ll be within your palms

for eager fingers to twist around.

The strength is in you,

the Way is in me.

Nothing created lacks

the gifts of gold,

if only you will commit yourself

to listen.

Outside time

Our lips found each other last night.

How, I don’t know.

But the soft skin hidden on you

came to the same softness in me.

Bringing you back,

wherever you are,

takes no effort-

moon and light align

outside time.

Joyous reunion.

Before upright is upright again

I love your puffy morning face,

the one no other gets to see,

in the soft time before lymph starts moving

and upright is upright again.

I love your puffy morning face.

The absence of fear amidst such joy

caught me unaware-

How different this is

from all the rest.

Remember?

Let the world hold you.

The father’s hands are spread beneath

your heavy newborn head and graceful spine,

his eyes engaged in gentle reverence.

Hearts in coherence.

The mother’s hands tuck you into bed,

following a long day of play,

and she sits beside you

to hear your last words before sleep,

brushing a tuft of hair from your brow.

In looking around and within,

you see humans in awkward and desperate extension,

searching for safety.

But safety

is not the reason for your existence,

for breath, for the sweetness of falling tears,

the exhilaration of dancing feet..

Sense the structure of your body,

feel the ground pushing back.

While finding that deep rest, a voice rises-

“Drop into me.

This is only your nest.

You have broad wings,

remember?”

the crippled reaching
for someone else to make you complete-
what teachings established in hearts
has wings
if it plants a strangler vine,
suggesting you aren’t whole
exactly as you are?
