Smoke thickens

Smoke thickens-
the matter of lives, burnt.
Sky can’t prepare for the soot
of curtain, letter, painting, bed pillow, tea pot, photograph,
weighting its blue.
Telling a friend his home is gone, eaten
by flames,
another unexpected duty.
Yet, mercifully, living words can be delivered
instead of the shock
of a middle of the night escape.
Drought.
Tinder.
Negligence.
Nature’s force, fueled.
Green becomes black.
The redefinition of essential.
Memory reduces
to what a mind can retain.
Celebrating moments,
understanding the past transforms,
in time,
like wood and metal consumed
by extreme and uninvited heat.
Humans skirt the fire,
narrowly, and
for this,
surging gratitude.
From the ashes,
magnificence does find grit.

Dig in

There is a dance here
Between getting what we want
And not.
Often, not serves up the wonder-
What’s a life that goes to plan?
Uncreative, controlled, missing the unexplained sparks,
a parched abiding, inviting scant vision, inside an airless cave.
Blasting past the walls
Free falling-
Rather to have an unexpected journey than the tourist package-
Come
Dig in
We’ll get messy together.

Initiation

A loss
A becoming
A walking away
The opening into…
Ruins of the expected,
tatters of the uninvited-
materials for another’s build.
Destruction,
this razing, a forgotten call heard-
Void,
her all,
Now.
These palms, soft cups of sky,
await
not only unstoppable but
full ocean strength.
Mystic union.
Awe of the inexplicable,
untraceable connection
–
This fig. With the plucking of this fig-
Initiation.

Thunder and vanilla

I wept into that creek,
threw my voice into the forest.
Held by rocks, shoeless,
a mothering container of mountain
offered cracks of thunder and vanilla,
the dry ponderosa.
Here, by coyote’s invitation,
song and word arose.
Safe to be cracked open,
the stars redefined boundaries,
bringing unguessable exploration
on two feet.

Rabbit at dawn

Meeting rabbit at dawn,
her form nearly a shadow in gold grass,
voices of three owls cross overhead.
Bat descends swiftly from behind,
grazes ground,
flies sharply up past my cheek.
Rabbit hops closer, stands high on hind feet,
bringing a clear river of scent to her twitching nose and,
with offset ears, sits, scratches, and
washes herself.
Dark full-bodied mosquitoes harvest breakfast
from my backside.
Red-shouldered hawk cries dominantly
from the west,
lands on cypress crown.
Young coyote trots past.

Walk with Me

Walking the live growing edge,
Flames of experience lick heels~
In this divine purification,
Ash feeds Earth,
Smoke tendrils rise in prayer, skyward,
Heart’s passion strengthens,
Love becomes boundless,
Devotion deep,
and the weight of gravity,
a welcomed morning blanket
holding us here, joyfully embodied.
By Grace,
Presence expands,
Spark resides…
Come walk with me,
be a light for One
and another-
the view is breathtaking,
the vital pulse ever danceable,
and the space to share,
Infinite.

Ways of the Antlered

Before deer’s ground nest
of dry needle and sap-fragrant soil,
I sit
in refuge rung by nibbled foliar spires
and thick backbone of pine.
Come peace.
Come stillness.
Come balance.
Come strength.
Gentle ways of the antlered one ask for givers of presence.
In study,
you are honored.

Coyote approaches

Coyote approaches
and, upon sensing me,
sits
gracefully,
slowly
stepping out his front paws
to lay down face to face.
Honor,
a swell, rolls through
in response to such a gift
from the wild.
I’d sweep the skies with bare hands
to bring stars down
to light your way,
weave the needles at my feet
to bring canyon waters to your lips..
but you have all that.
The best I can give is my presence,
gratitude,
a full heart,
and respect for big ears, bushy-furred tail,
and your taste for the unexpected.

Ravishing Journey

In the moment you stopped
and saw me,
I knew Spirit was there
galloping between blissful hearts and keen eyes.
Explanations, unnecessary,
the impact of presence and recognition
loud.
We’ve both learned to ride
the untameable mustang-
no cloth. no leather. no fear. between.
With fur and flesh and speed and wind,
muscle gripping muscle, fingers braided in mane,
bodies leaping..
the greatest lone expanse breaks open,
a beauty possessing and unfolding into One…
Few comprehend where we have been.
In honor of sharing this ravishing journey,
thank you.

Within Reach

Lift your palm,
kiss the center,
She waits there to kiss you back.
In your heart, She drums-
your pulse, Her rhythm.
The vision through your blinking eyes
of widest sky and massive cloud play,
that is She
gazing upon Herself..
Originating in you, or from the heavens- which?
Remember, One can not be outside itself.
She sustains, effortlessly
within reach-
You awaken
and Her breath is yours.
